June 18 - 26, 2012

We learned lots of information about many colleges and universities:

Southern boasts of being the largest University System in the HBCU chain.

Jackson State University in Jackson, MS gave us a well-rounded presentation that included souvenirs, printed info, oral info about students/staff and notable alums (like Walter Peyton) along with some great videos!  The biographical video about their quarterback had us near tears!  Jackson State is a student favorite!

Jackson State invites everyone to "Recruit Day" on September 29th for a free football game and dinner.  They will play Prairie View A & M University.  Besides academics and aesthetics, one of the things to love about Jackson State is that due dates remain the same year-after-year.  If the date falls on the weekend, it rolls over to the following Monday.  Therefore, it is much easier for prospective students to get accurate information about deadlines for documents, applications, and events!

Also on Juneteenth (June 19th), after touring Jackson State University, we took some time to visit the Mississippi State Capitol.  What a great time to teach the students more about the history of the United States!  They saw the beautifully renovated former capitol building and read, heard, and experienced life in Mississippi - for slaves and slaveowners.

Morehouse is a school for males and Spelman is a school for females; they are conjoined and work together.  A Morehouse Man and a Spelman Lady are paired at the beginning of the year to promote platonic and mutually beneficial relationships.  The students can take classes at either school and both schools boast of academic excellence.  Dr. Martin Luther King is a graduate of Morehouse.  Spelman received her name as the maiden name of the wife of John D. Rockefeller since he purchased the land for the school and was a major benefactor.  Another benefactor is Camille Hanks Cosby, the wife of actor/comedian Bill Cosby.

North Carolina A&T promotes the fact that students from their university paid a major part in the Civil Rights struggle.  They have a large, lovely campus.  Their college of Engineering graduates the largest number of African-American Engineers and is the home of the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center.

Yale University became the only Ivy League school we could visit after bus problems but it proved to be enough!  The town and university were planned so that students from all levels would interact with each other.  Each of the Residential Colleges house some students from each level: freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors; and the residence halls all face a common courtyard to further promote this interaction.  It was especially exciting to learn that NO student graduating from Yale graduates owing any money!!!  There were lots of interesting facts and site on the campus but the Library was a major highlight.  Even though a fire alarm cut our visit short, the 'Cathedral of Books' (as the architect named it) was built as a Cathedral and carried the theme throughout the building.  The library is 14 stories high!

The band students remained in Washington DC and played at the capitol when our STEM bus went on to Yale.  Buses were rejoined in DC and finished the trip together.

Grambling State University highlight the football legend/ coach Eddie Robinson; there is a museum erected in his honor.  The football team is now coached by former Super Bowl Quarterback & Most Valuable Player for the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XXII.  The university is located in a rather remote area of Northern Louisiana.

We look forward to improving the College and University Tour and continuing this annual tour.  Come join us next year!  Contact Dr. Brenda Lynch (832.646.8809) if you're interested.
